SafePal, launched in 2018 and backed by Binance, offers both an air-gapped hardware device (QR-code signing, no USB/Bluetooth on most models) and a free companion software wallet/browser extension that can be used on its own as a hot wallet. Its hardware line is self-custody, cold storage. We have not completed a hands-on test and publish no current price until confirmed on SafePal's own site.

Two products under one name

SafePal is worth understanding as two related but distinct products: a hardware device line (cold storage, EAL5+ certified secure element on most models, QR-code and air-gapped signing) and a free standalone software wallet/browser extension (a hot wallet, usable entirely on its own without ever buying the hardware). Which SafePal product you are evaluating changes the security model considerably, so be specific about which one a claim refers to.

Hardware security model

The hardware line's headline feature is being air-gapped on most models — signing via QR code rather than a USB or Bluetooth data connection — paired with an EAL5+ certified secure-element chip. Backup uses a standard 12–24 word recovery phrase. As with any hardware wallet, buy only from SafePal's official store or an authorised reseller.

Software wallet and everyday use

The companion SafePal app can run entirely as a software hot wallet without the hardware device, with native in-app staking for select assets and a Chrome browser extension for desktop dApp use — but used this way it carries the standard hot-wallet risk profile (software-encrypted keys, no secure element) rather than the hardware line's cold-storage model. There is no dedicated native desktop app; desktop access is via the browser extension.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths

  • Hardware line is air-gapped (QR-code signing) with an EAL5+ certified secure element on most models.
  • Free companion software wallet can be used entirely standalone if you don't need hardware-level custody.
  • Native in-app staking for select assets on the software wallet.

Limitations

  • Two distinct products (hardware vs software wallet) under one brand — be specific about which security model a claim refers to.
  • The software wallet, used alone, carries standard hot-wallet risk — no secure element.
  • We have not completed a hands-on test and publish no current price.

Frequently asked questions

Is SafePal a hardware or software wallet?

Both — SafePal makes an air-gapped hardware device line and a separate free software wallet/browser extension that can be used entirely on its own. They have different security models: the hardware is cold storage with a secure element; the software wallet is a standard hot wallet.

Does SafePal's hardware use USB or Bluetooth?

Most models are air-gapped, signing via QR code rather than a USB or Bluetooth data connection.

Can I use SafePal without buying the hardware device?

Yes, the SafePal app and browser extension work as a free standalone software wallet without ever purchasing the hardware, though that mode carries the standard hot-wallet (no secure-element) risk profile.
