Cardano (ADA)

layer-1 · Launched 2017

By Ledger · Last updated 8 July 2026

Cardano launched in 2017, founded by Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson through the company IOG (Input Output Global). It is built on Ouroboros, a proof-of-stake protocol whose design was published through peer-reviewed academic research, and has been rolled out in named development eras — Byron, Shelley, Goguen, Basho and Voltaire — each adding a distinct layer of capability rather than shipping as one single release.

Ouroboros and the research-first approach

Ouroboros was the first proof-of-stake protocol to be proven secure through formal, peer-reviewed academic methods rather than shipped first and analysed later — a deliberate research-first approach IOG has continued across Cardano's subsequent upgrades. Stakers delegate ADA to stake pools operated by third parties, earning a share of rewards without needing to run validation infrastructure themselves.

Smart contracts and governance

Smart-contract capability arrived later than on Ethereum, with the Alonzo upgrade in 2021 introducing Plutus, Cardano's native smart-contract language, built on Haskell. The most recent named era, Voltaire, is focused on on-chain governance — letting ADA holders vote on treasury spending and protocol parameters directly, rather than governance living purely off-chain or with a foundation holding sole discretion.

Tokenomics

circulating-supply
max-supply 45,000,000,000 ADA (protocol-fixed maximum)
issuance-model Fixed cap; remaining ADA released as staking rewards until the maximum is reached

Risks & criticisms

  • Cardano's phased, research-first rollout has meant some capabilities (smart contracts, on-chain governance) arrived years after competing layer-1s — a deliberate trade-off, but worth knowing when comparing ecosystem maturity.
  • DeFi and dApp activity, while growing, has historically been smaller than on Ethereum or Solana; check current ecosystem metrics before assuming feature parity.
  • As with any proof-of-stake asset, delegating to a stake pool involves trusting that pool's uptime and configuration, though ADA itself is not at slashing risk in Cardano's model the way it can be on some other networks.

Frequently asked questions

Who founded Cardano?

Charles Hoskinson, a co-founder of Ethereum, founded Cardano in 2017 through the company IOG (Input Output Global).

What is Ouroboros?

Ouroboros is Cardano's proof-of-stake consensus protocol, notable for being proven secure through peer-reviewed academic research before deployment.

Does Cardano have a maximum ADA supply?

Yes — the protocol caps total supply at 45 billion ADA, with remaining ADA released as staking rewards until that cap is reached.
