Solana launched its mainnet beta in March 2020, built by Anatoly Yakovenko and the Solana Labs team around a specific bet: that a single, highly optimised layer-1 could offer far higher throughput and lower fees than Ethereum by combining proof-of-stake with a novel timestamping mechanism, rather than scaling primarily through separate layer-2 networks.

Solana's distinguishing technical idea is Proof of History (PoH), a verifiable clock that timestamps transactions before consensus is reached on their order, reducing the communication overhead validators need to agree on sequencing. This is combined with a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism (Tower BFT) for finality, together aiming at thousands of transactions per second and sub-second confirmation under normal conditions.

That performance-first design has a trade-off: Solana has experienced several widely reported network outages and periods of degraded performance over its history, generally attributed to resource exhaustion from transaction spam or client bugs, and the team has shipped multiple client and fee-market upgrades specifically to address this.

Ecosystem and use cases

Solana's low fees and fast confirmation have made it a popular base for high-frequency DeFi trading, NFT minting, and — particularly since 2023–2024 — a major venue for meme-token launches and trading via on-chain launchpads. It also has a growing base of mobile and payments-oriented projects aiming to use its speed for point-of-sale and consumer use cases.
